Tips For A Stress Free Holiday

It’s the most wonderful time of the year and, for many, this can also be one of the most stressful times of the year.

With all the gift-buying, traffic-navigating, cooking, cleaning, decorating, parties, travel and more – slowly but surely, the holidays can start to feel more like hard work than time off for celebrations.

We’ve put together some expert tips for having a stress-free holiday and making the most of your holiday season:

Let Go of Perfection

Even if you end up being the only one on the block without Christmas lights up, home not fully adorned with season’s decoration, or whose desserts did not turn out just right – it’s happened to all of us at some point and it’s part of life, and certainly not the most important part.

Perfect doesn’t even exist; so spare yourself unnecessary worrying and stressing right now.  Those who care about us just want to spend times with us, and will not care about having a perfect dinner or gift or ambience.  Instead of focusing on imperfections and what’s lacking – let it go and focus on what’s already great.

Ask for Help/Delegate

One person cannot do everything by himself or herself, and there is no shame in needing help and asking for help.

When family or friends offer to help, graciously accept, whether it’s to bring a dish, to pick up something you may need for a party, or to help you decorate.  If you’re feeling overwhelmed, ask a family member or close friend to support you in any way that may help.

Plan Well and Start Early

Many of us procrastinate, or are not good at planning ahead.  If you tend to get stressed out because you left things to do for the last minute, see if you can get some help in getting organized and starting to do what you can earlier rather than later.

Things like shopping, gift-wrapping, packing to go out of town are some of the items you can cross off your to-do list earlier.  So, do your best not to wait until last minute to get things done and stay up all night – and avoid getting overwhelmed, drained, and stressed.

Practice Saying No

Especially around holidays, our calendars tend to fill up very fast, leading to more stress and overwhelm.  You can only do so much.  Listen to your inner knowing, and say Yes only to things that you can do, and that deep inside you want to do.

So be mindful about picking and choosing events and obligations – which ones are important to you, and which are the ones you can stand to miss.  Practice speaking your truth and saying no in a kind way, and without feeling bad.

Remember to Take Care of You

During such demanding and busy times, remember to take care of your wellbeing.

Each day, pause, take a breath, and do something for yourself, such as take a relaxing bath, yoga class, walk, or whatever will help you unwind and fill up your cup, so that you can be there for others and for your task and activities.

Remember What the Season Is Really About

It’s not about how ornate your house is; it’s not about frantic shopping; it’s about sharing special moments and experiences with your loved ones.

So, perhaps, instead of worrying about finding the best new gadget or piece of jewelry and fussing about getting it nicely wrapped, you may want to treat your loved ones to a holiday show, a painting or cooking lesson (that you do together), a planned day of exploring the nearby town together; or, buy them something purposeful and meaningful, such as a gift certificate for having their home professionally cleaned!

And, when you’re about to get triggered and upset as someone cuts you off or takes your parking spot, remember that the holidays are about celebrating something special with loved ones, and try to relax and not stress about the trivial things – and focus on all the things you can be grateful for.
